Abstract

This study aims to describe the mathematical problem-solving ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Tanimbar Selatan on the topic of Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SLETV). The study was motivated by students' low learning outcomes on this topic, as indicated by the results of preliminary observations, in which the majority of students were not yet able to solve word problems in real-life contexts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, tests, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of eighth-grade students selected based on high, medium, and low levels of mastery. The results show that most students still experience difficulties in understanding the problems, constructing mathematical models, and carrying out calculations accurately. Although some students were able to model the problems and solve them correctly, errors were still found in interpreting the results or in computational accuracy. Therefore, it is important for teachers to provide more intensive guidance and to use a contextual learning approach so that students' mathematical problem-solving ability can improve.
