Introduction: Kewang is a traditional institution that plays a significant role in conserving the environment and enforcing customary law within the coastal communities of Central Maluku Regency.
Purpose of the Research: This study aims to evaluate Kewang’s contribution to natural-resource management through the practice of sasi, the enforcement of customary sanctions, and its collaboration with customary governance structures such as the Raja and Saniri Negeri.
Methods of the Research: This research uses a qualitative approach with an empirical juridical method in the customary villages (negeri adat) of Nusa Laut Island.
Results / Findings: Kewang plays an important role in maintaining the ecological, social, and cultural balance of the indigenous community. Sasi functions as a means of sustainable resource management, Village Regulations (Peraturan Negeri) strengthen customary law by codifying it in writing, and customary as well as social sanctions effectively build community compliance with customary norms. Environmental sustainability in Nusa Laut depends heavily on Kewang as the guardian of customary values and the local ecosystem.
