⚡ Quick Summary: Authors retain full copyright to their work. All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). No copyright transfer is required.

A. COPYRIGHT STATEMENT

Journal of Systems Biology and Mathematical Modeling (JSBMM) operates under a gold open access model where authors retain full copyright of their work. This approach ensures that creators maintain control over their intellectual property while enabling broad dissemination of research.

Key Principle: Copyright retention, not copyright transfer

Unlike traditional journals that require authors to transfer copyright to the publisher, JSBMM allows authors to keep their copyright while granting the journal the right of first publication.

B. LICENSE TO PUBLISH

  1. 1 Grant of License

By submitting a manuscript to JSBMM, authors grant the journal a non-exclusive license to publish the work under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This license allows JSBMM to:

    • Publish the article and make it publicly available
    • Distribute the article in all formats and media
    • Index and archive the article
    • Allow others to use, share, and build upon the work with proper attribution
  2. 2 Author Rights

Under this non-exclusive license, authors retain the right to:

    • Self-archive their work in institutional repositories, personal websites, or subject repositories (arXiv, bioRxiv, etc.)
    • Reuse their material in books, lectures, presentations, and other publications
    • Distribute copies to colleagues and students
    • Modify and adapt their work for future research
    • Grant further permissions to third parties, as long as it does not conflict with the CC BY license
Note: Authors do not need to request permission from JSBMM for these uses, as copyright remains with the author.
  3. 3 Third-Party Rights

Under the CC BY 4.0 license, third parties (readers, researchers, educators) have the right to:

    • Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
    • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially
    • Use for text and data mining, AI training, and other computational analyses

The only condition is that proper attribution must be given to the original authors and the JSBMM publication.

C. CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSE (CC BY 4.0)

All articles published in JSBMM are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This is one of the most permissive open licenses available, ensuring maximum dissemination and reuse of research.

D. AUTHOR WARRANTIES

By submitting a manuscript to JSBMM, authors warrant that:

  1. Originality: The work is original and has not been published elsewhere (except as a preprint or conference paper).
  2. Authorship: All authors have approved the submission and agree to be accountable for the work.
  3. Permissions: Any third-party material included in the manuscript is properly credited and used with permission.
  4. No Conflicts: Any potential conflicts of interest have been disclosed.

E. PREPRINT AND POSTPRINT POLICY

Preprints

Authors may deposit earlier versions of their manuscript (preprints) in any repository or on any website before or during submission to JSBMM. Citation of the preprint in the cover letter is appreciated but not required.

Postprints

After publication, authors may deposit the accepted version (postprint) or the final published PDF in repositories, on personal websites, or academic networks immediately with no embargo period.

Version of Record

The published PDF (Version of Record) may be shared immediately. Users should always cite the final published version when available.

F. ATTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS

When reusing content published in JSBMM, proper attribution must be provided. The recommended attribution format is:

[Author(s)] [Year] [Article Title] Journal of Systems Biology and Mathematical Modeling, [Volume](Issue): [Page numbers]. DOI: [DOI] Licensed under CC BY 4.0.

Example: Smith J, Johnson A 2026 Mathematical Modeling of Gene Regulatory Networks Journal of Systems Biology and Mathematical Modeling, 1(1): 1-15. DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.1234567 Licensed under CC BY 4.0.

⚠️ Note: Failure to provide proper attribution constitutes a violation of the CC BY license and may be considered academic misconduct.

G. PERMISSIONS FOR THIRD-PARTY CONTENT

If a manuscript includes figures, tables, or other content that has been previously published elsewhere, authors are responsible for:

  • Obtaining permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material under the CC BY 4.0 license
  • Properly citing the original source
  • Providing evidence of permissions to the editorial office upon request

Content that is in the public domain or covered by compatible open licenses may be used without additional permission, but proper attribution is still required.

H. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I sign a copyright transfer agreement?

No. JSBMM does not require copyright transfer. Authors retain copyright and sign a non-exclusive license to publish agreement.

Can I use my article in my thesis or dissertation?

Yes. Authors retain the right to include their published article in theses, dissertations, and other academic works without requesting permission.

Can others use my figures in their publications?

Yes, under CC BY 4.0, others may reuse figures as long as they provide proper attribution to the original source.

What if I want to publish my article in another language?

Authors may publish translations of their work elsewhere, provided they acknowledge the original publication in JSBMM. This is permitted under the CC BY license.

Can I remove my article from the journal website?

Once published, articles remain permanently available as part of the scholarly record. However, authors may request corrections or, in rare cases, retractions following COPE guidelines.
