Abstract

The city of Payakumbuh is one of the cocoa-producing areas in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra, which has significant potential for the development of chocolate processing agroindustry. One of the growing industries in this area is the Chokato Chocolate Factory. This study aims to analyze the location and the factors influencing the development of the chocolate processing industry in Payakumbuh. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the location selection of the Chokato industry is in accordance with Alfred Weber’s industrial location theory, which emphasizes minimizing costs, particularly transportation costs of raw materials, product distribution to markets, and labor costs. In addition, the factors influencing the development of this industry include the availability of local raw materials, government and institutional support, availability of local labor, transportation infrastructure and accessibility, and product promotion. These findings indicate that the combination of location factors and institutional support plays an important role in encouraging the sustainability and development of the chocolate processing industry in Payakumbuh.
